My Hero Academia is a Japanese manga series created by Kōhei Horikoshi. It ran from July 2014 to August 2024 in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, and it has been compiled into 42 tankōbon volumes. The plot follows Izuku Midoriya in a world where superpowers known as "Quirks" have become the norm. Midoriya is unique in that he was born without a Quirk, but nevertheless dreams of becoming a hero. All Might, the world's greatest hero, recognizes Midoriya’s potential, and decides to give his Quirk to Midoriya, after which he helps him gain admission to a prestigious high school for superheroes in training. The manga is also responsible for creating a media franchise, motivating many other spin-off manga, like My Hero Academia: Smash!!, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions. In addition to video games, it has branched out into light novels, stage plays, and various forms of merchandise and media. Bones also adapted it into an anime television series. The first and second seasons aired in Japan in 2016 and 2017 respectively, followed by the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons, which ran from 2018 to 2023. The latest season is set to air from May to October 2024, followed by an eighth and final season tentatively scheduled for October 2025. The anime has also been accompanied by four animated films, two of which include My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission, alongside ten original video animations (OVAs). My Hero Academia has become commercially popular, hitting The New York Times best-seller list multiple times. As of April 2024, the series has sold over 100 million copies including sales of spin-offs which makes it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The reviews have also been positive with people praising the manga for its artwork, characters, story, action, incorporation of American comic book culture, and westernized pop culture; the anime adaptation has also been praised significantly for its animation, music, pacing, action scenes, and voice acting in both Japanese and English. The manga has been the recipient of several awards which include the Sugoi Japan Award and Harvey Award for Best Manga, and is considered one of the best manga of the 2010s. The anime has also won numerous awards and is widely regarded as one of the best anime of the 2010s.
